From the Taiwan World / Areas

Tainan

Tainan is Taiwan’s old capital and a strong choice for temple culture and early maritime history. Its older sites reward time beyond a single fort stop.

Tainan

Why go

Dutch traders built Fort Zeelandia here, and the city remained a capital under Zheng Chenggong and later Qing rule. The first Confucian school-temple, old city gates and living Taoist traditions give those periods different physical and cultural forms. Tainan is where Taiwan’s early colonial and port histories become a city walk rather than an abstract timeline.

What to look for

  • The Fort Zeelandia site in Anping
  • The first Confucian school-temple, founded in 1665
  • Remains of the old eastern and southern city gates

Useful to know

  • Group historic sites by neighborhood so the older city is more than a quick detour.
  • Make space for living temples as well as monuments; active rites are part of Tainan’s character.
