Fort San Domingo

This red fort above Tamsui preserves several chapters of northern Taiwan’s foreign-contact history. The fort and later consular buildings make it more than a single facade.

Why go

The first Spanish fort here did not survive; the Dutch rebuilt the site in the 1640s, and later occupants added their own spaces. Walk between the red stronghold and the residence to see those layers side by side. Its hilltop position also explains why this point mattered at the river mouth.

What to look for

  • Red Dutch-era fort
  • Later consular buildings overlooking Tamsui

Useful to know

  • Visit the fort and the adjoining former consular residence as one site.
