Wat Mahathat, Ayutthaya
At Ayutthaya’s Wat Mahathat, a Buddha head held by tree roots stands within the remains of a former royal monastery and relic site. The atmosphere is archaeological rather than devotional.
Why go
This temple connects the city’s political and religious past in one compact stop. It once housed relics and served the Supreme Patriarch, while the surviving masonry records the destruction of the old capital. The rooted Buddha head is the best known detail, but take time to read it against the surrounding ruins rather than treating it as a stand alone photograph.
