Church of Saint Catherine
This small late Byzantine church in the northwestern old city rewards a focused stop for its five domes and surviving frescoes, especially the Last Judgement in the narthex.
Why go
Look past the modest exterior to understand how much late Byzantine art survives in Thessaloniki. The frescoes, dated to around 1315, make the narthex especially worth examining. Its position in the old city also makes it a useful stop while exploring the churches and streets above the centre.
What to look for
Five domes shape the church’s distinctive silhouette.
The narthex preserves a Last Judgement fresco.
Fragments of wall painting date to around 1315.
Useful to know
Allow a short, attentive stop rather than treating it as a large museum visit.
Check the church’s current opening arrangements before making a special trip uphill.
