Church of Prophet Elijah
In the upper old city, this 14th-century church stands out for an Athonite-style plan unusual in Thessaloniki. Visit for the architecture as much as the surviving wall paintings.
Why go
Its architectural form was associated with monastic main churches and is an unusual example beyond Mount Athos. Walk around the exterior to read its massing and patterned brick-and-stone walls, then look for fragments of late Byzantine painting inside. The stop also gives a reason to explore the upper quarter of the old city.
What to look for
The Athonite-style plan sets this church apart from others in the city.
Brick and pale stone alternate across the exterior masonry.
Fragments of late Byzantine wall painting survive inside.
Useful to know
Give the exterior a full circuit before entering, if access permits.
Pair the stop with other upper-city churches to make the climb worthwhile.
Check the current church timetable before relying on interior access.
