Church of Saint Nicholas Orphanos
Near the eastern old-city walls, this early 14th-century church is a strong choice for Byzantine painting. Frescoes cover much of its interior, alongside an original marble screen.
Why go
The unusually extensive fresco cycle makes this a place to slow down rather than merely tick off a monument. Compare the painted surfaces with the surviving marble templon, then notice how the modest church once fitted into a monastery near the city wall. The paintings were uncovered during 20th-century restoration.
What to look for
Early 14th-century frescoes cover much of the interior.
The marble templon survives from the church’s founding period.
Remains of the former monastery gate stand to the east.
Useful to know
Set aside time inside for the paintings rather than just viewing the exterior.
Combine the church with a walk along the nearby eastern old-city walls.
Verify current opening arrangements before climbing into the upper city.
