Sant’Alessandro Maggiore
Sant’Alessandro is a restrained Romanesque church whose pale stone façade stands apart from Lucca’s more ornate fronts. Access to the interior is uncertain; see it as an architectural exterior stop.
Why go
The appeal lies in its quiet proportions and classical detail. A document mentions the church by the ninth century, and the surviving building shows how Luccan Romanesque design could draw on ancient forms without San Michele’s dense decoration. Its spare exterior invites comparison with nearby San Michele in Foro.
What to look for
Pale limestone gives the façade a calm, even surface.
Classical-looking proportions distinguish its Romanesque design.
Useful to know
Look at the façade alongside Lucca’s more elaborate churches for a useful contrast.
