The Scuola Normale Superiore was founded in 1810 under Napoleonic rule, drawing on the model of the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. The institution changed through the return of the Tuscan grand dukes and the formation of the Italian state, but remained tied to Pisa's intellectual life. Its principal historic address is Palazzo della Carovana on Piazza dei Cavalieri. That palace had been reshaped for the Knights of St Stephen centuries earlier, so the school's presence is another layer in a square first used for civic power and then for a military-religious order.
