Why go
The monastery connects royal patronage with two major voices of medieval Valencian literature. Queen Maria established the Poor Clare community here in the fifteenth century; its first abbess, Isabel de Villena, wrote Vita Christi, while physician and writer Jaume Roig was also linked to the house.
What to look for
- The church façade uses masonry and brick in a Flamboyant Gothic composition.
- Its fifteenth-century portal is related in style to the nearby Silk Exchange.
- A Renaissance ceramic tondo above the entrance is a copy of an Italian original.
Useful to know
- Treat the façade as the reliable visit unless the monastery confirms public access.
- Look above the entrance for the Renaissance ceramic tondo.
