Cycling in Vancouver

Protected routes and waterfront greenways make bicycles practical for Stanley Park, False Creek and many cross-city trips, with hills increasing away from the shore.

Cycling in Vancouver

The full story

The seawall is Vancouver’s most appealing visitor ride, linking Stanley Park with Coal Harbour and sections of False Creek. It is also busy and carefully managed: cyclists must follow posted directions, respect one-way sections and remain in designated lanes where pedestrian space is separate. Beyond the water, a network of neighbourhood bikeways and protected lanes crosses downtown and connects major districts. Routes toward UBC, Queen Elizabeth Park and the North Shore involve more distance or climbing than the waterfront suggests; an electric-assist bicycle can make those trips more manageable. Use the City of Vancouver’s current cycling map to avoid high-traffic arterials and construction detours. Lock rental bikes securely and do not leave accessories unattended. Buses can extend some journeys with front-mounted racks, but capacity is limited. In rain, painted surfaces, leaves and wooden sections become slippery, so reduce speed and allow more braking distance.
