Why go
The obelisk reached its present position before Bernini laid out the surrounding colonnades. That sequence matters: the ancient monument was already an anchor when the later square took shape around it. Looking from the obelisk toward the basilica and back across the square makes those different layers of history legible.
What to look for
- The obelisk occupies the centre of St. Peter’s Square.
- It once stood in the circus of Caligula and Nero.
Useful to know
- View it from more than one side of the square; event security may affect movement.
