The full story
Bernini’s four rows of columns define the curved edges of St. Peter’s Square. Walk along them to feel how the architecture frames public gatherings before the basilica.
The columns make the square a designed approach rather than an empty forecourt. Their repeated rows create depth at ground level, while statues of saints run above them. Together those details turn the boundary of the square into an architectural experience distinct from its central obelisk or the basilica facade.
- Four rows of columns form the colonnade.
- Statues of saints line its upper edge.
Walk along one curved side, then look back across the square to read its shape.
