From Bernini’s Square to St. Peter’s Basilica

Why go

Begin at the Vatican Obelisk in St. Peter’s Square and walk Bernini’s Colonnade to see how its curves frame the basilica. Cross the square toward the right-hand security checkpoints; the 75-minute transfer allowance includes walking, queuing and entry screening, with busy periods able to take longer. Once inside St. Peter’s Basilica, allow a substantial visit to the nave, chapels and baldachin before pausing at Michelangelo’s Pietà. The Vatican Grottoes are an optional final descent if open; staff may direct you to their current entrance and exit. This route follows the public square into the basilica’s art and memorial setting. Worship services and papal events can change visiting access, so check the basilica’s arrangements that day.
