Why go
After the Vatican Museums entrance, use the Square Garden as a short pause on the approach to the Pinacoteca. The Pinacoteca Raphael Room (Room VIII) gathers Raphael’s paintings, and the Pinacoteca Leonardo Room (Room IX) displays Leonardo’s unfinished St Jerome. Continue forward to the Baroque room, Room XII, for Caravaggio’s Deposition, then take the later rooms to Wenzel Peter’s densely populated animal painting in Room XVI. This is a chronological painting route with a little outdoor space, suited to visitors who prefer fewer collections studied carefully. Budget 30–45 minutes for entrance checks and finding the garden within the first stop; internal room transfers account for the galleries between named works.
