Crossing the Grand Canal

Four bridges and water crossings connect the two sides of the Grand Canal, balancing Venice's walking routes with the waterway that still carries much of its movement.

Crossing the Grand Canal

Why go

The crossings explain a basic Venetian choice: walk to a bridge or take a boat across. Rialto remains the historic landmark, while the Accademia, Scalzi, and Constitution bridges serve different points along the canal. A traghetto offers a short standing crossing where available, but it should be treated as transport, not a sightseeing tour.

What to look for

  • Rialto Bridge was long the only fixed crossing of the Grand Canal.
  • The Accademia and Scalzi bridges added nineteenth-century walking links.
  • Traghetti are simple gondola ferries used for short cross-canal passages.

The full story

For centuries, the Rialto Bridge was the only fixed way to cross the Grand Canal. That fact reflects the canal's role as a busy urban waterway: building and maintaining a bridge was a major undertaking, while boats remained the ordinary way to move along and across the city. Later, the Scalzi and Accademia bridges created additional walking connections, and the Constitution Bridge linked the Piazzale Roma side with Santa Lucia station. At several points, traghetti—simple gondola ferries—provide a shorter crossing by water. The result is a city where a map's straight line can be misleading. Two places facing each other across the canal may require a detour to the nearest bridge or a boat crossing. This is not an inconvenience to ignore; it is one of the clearest ways Venice still follows its historic logic, with the canal acting as both central route and substantial barrier.

Useful to know

  • Choose a bridge before committing to a walking route; the nearest opposite-bank sight may be far from the next crossing.
  • Check the official water-transport timetable if planning a ferry or water-bus connection.
  • Keep canal-side steps clear and use designated landings when boarding or leaving boats.
