Why go
The peninsula gives the town a clear geographic sequence: the Scaliger Castle controls the entrance, while the Grotte di Catullo connect the lake shore with Roman elite residence. This combination makes Sirmione a more specific choice than a general Garda outing, bringing defensive architecture and waterside leisure into the same small historical setting.
What to look for
- The Scaliger Castle occupies the entrance to the peninsula.
- A moat surrounds the castle’s fortifications.
- The Grotte di Catullo preserve the remains of a large Roman residence.
The full story
The southern Lake Garda area attracted wealthy Roman families, and Catullus praised Sirmione in his poetry. The site known as the Grotte di Catullo preserves the remains of a substantial Roman private building. Its name carries the poet’s association, but the archaeological structure is the tangible focus of the visit. The peninsula also had a defensive role. The Scaliger Castle stands at its entrance, with a moat and fortified harbor connecting land control to activity on the lake. Its position explains why access could be supervised at this narrow point. The town’s military importance continued beyond the medieval period. Sirmione later belonged to the Venetian Republic for several centuries, linking this Lombard lakeside town to Venice’s mainland history. Churches such as Santa Maria Maggiore add further layers within the centre. The peninsula thus brings together several uses of an attractive but strategic location: elite residence, fortification and a town embedded in wider regional rule.
