Venice International Film Festival

The Venice International Film Festival brings a dated cinema programme to the Lido’s screening venues. Plan attendance around a particular edition and film, rather than expecting a permanent drop-in attraction.

Venice International Film Festival

Why go

The festival offers Venice through cinema rather than its historical art collections. Palazzo del Cinema and the surrounding Lido venues provide a concentrated setting for screenings and awards during an edition. Its resort-island origins add cultural context, linking international film history with a part of Venice shaped by hotels and the Adriatic shore.

What to look for

  • Palazzo del Cinema is the festival’s main headquarters on Lungomare Marconi.
  • Sala Grande hosts major screenings and awards ceremonies during the festival.
  • The nearby Hotel Excelsior was the setting for the first edition.

The full story

The festival began in 1932 on the terrace of the Hotel Excelsior, placing its first screenings within the Lido’s resort landscape. The initial edition was noncompetitive. Competition followed in 1934, and an international jury was introduced before the Palazzo del Cinema opened in 1937. Its early history also reflects political pressures. Fascist-era awards and wartime restrictions shaped participation and recognition, and the editions held during the Second World War were later excluded from the festival’s official sequence. Revival after the war gave the event another beginning within a changed European cultural setting. The festival belongs to La Biennale, whose activities encompass several separate artistic disciplines. Cinema developed its own concentrated island geography around screening venues on the Lido. That history explains why attending a film is a distinct Venice experience: the festival combines an international programme, a purpose-built cinema setting and the older resort culture from which the event emerged.

Useful to know

  • For a future edition, check La Biennale’s programme and ticket information before choosing a screening.
  • Match the screening venue to the boat journey and return plan on the Lido.
  • Outside a festival edition, treat the Lido outing as a separate coastal or architectural visit.
