Why go
This is Zurichʼs most substantial art visit. Moving between the older museum and David Chipperfieldʼs extension lets you compare collection history with a newer, more spacious display language. The breadth is the advantage and the trap: a themed route through Swiss art, modernism or contemporary work is more satisfying than total coverage.
What to look for
- Compare the older Moser galleries with the pale stone spaces of the Chipperfield extension.
- Seek out works by Swiss artists alongside the better-known international modernists.
- Use the connecting passage to understand how the two buildings function as one museum.
Useful to know
- Pick a collection theme before entering and leave temporary exhibitions as optional.
- Pair the museum with Grossmünster or Cabaret Voltaire rather than another large collection.
