Why go

Las Cigarreras is worth the detour when the building matters as much as the event. Three large factory halls now support contemporary art, heritage and music, while courtyards, surviving industrial volumes and an outdoor vertical garden reveal how a production complex was adapted rather than erased.

What to look for

  • Three former factory halls now separate contemporary culture, heritage and music uses.
  • Industrial courtyards and large production volumes remain legible within the conversion.
  • An outdoor vertical garden adds a living surface to the brick-and-concrete complex.

The full story

Las Cigarreras preserves the scale of Alicante's former tobacco industry while giving the complex a different civic purpose. Tobacco production once required broad halls, internal yards and specialised work areas; the cultural conversion keeps those dimensions visible instead of disguising them as conventional galleries. Contemporary exhibitions occupy one part of the site, while heritage and music uses fill others. That division encourages visitors to notice how the factory operated as a collection of linked spaces rather than one monumental room. The outdoor vertical garden introduces a deliberate contrast with the surviving industrial fabric. Because the programme changes, no single exhibition defines the centre. Its durable value lies in the encounter between old production architecture and present-day creative work, showing a side of Alicante that is less polished and more industrial than the old town or waterfront.

Useful to know

  • Check the current programme first because exhibitions and performances determine how much of the complex is active.
  • Allow 60 to 90 minutes for an exhibition and the industrial spaces around it.
  • Combine the centre with Mount Benacantil or nearby northern neighbourhoods rather than the marina.
