Why go
Walk it to see how a thirteenth-century route changed from a prestigious shopping street into a dense strip of bars, restaurants, specialist shops and LGBTQI+ nightlife. The contrast is sharper than on the broader Damrak nearby. It also shows how close the old harbour quarter remains to Dam Square.
What to look for
- Follow the narrow line running parallel to the Amstel's former course.
- Watch the rapid change from old facades to leather-scene and nightlife venues.
- Use side alleys to glimpse the canals and the adjoining De Wallen district.
The full story
Warmoesstraat dates to Amsterdam's earliest growth and runs between the station area and Dam Square, parallel to the Amstel's old channel. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries it was a leading shopping street; the poet Joost van den Vondel sold silk stockings here before becoming known for his plays and verse. Commercial prestige later shifted elsewhere, but the street remained intensely used. Its present character brings ordinary city functions into unusually close contact: shops, inexpensive lodging, restaurants, coffee shops, adult businesses and small cultural spaces occupy a narrow medieval route. Warmoesstraat also became a focal point for Amsterdam's leather scene and remains part of the city's LGBTQI+ nightlife geography. That history is easiest to grasp by comparing the street with nearby Damrak. Damrak is broad and processional; Warmoesstraat keeps the compressed scale of the old centre, where different eras and activities sit almost doorway to doorway.
Useful to know
- Walk the street in daylight for architecture and return later only if its nightlife is your aim.
- Keep moving through narrow sections and leave doorways clear.
- Link Warmoesstraat with Zeedijk for two different strands of the old harbour quarter.
