Antwerp City Hall
The Renaissance city hall anchors the west side of Grote Markt, where its ornate façade reflects Antwerp’s sixteenth-century trading wealth. The square and ground floor offer different ways to see it.
Why go
Stand back in Grote Markt to read the façade as a statement of civic confidence: an arcaded base, ordered columns and an elaborate central section replace the Gothic town-hall style once planned here. The building also gives the square a strong visual counterpoint to its guild houses.
What to look for
The façade layers an arcaded base, classical columns and a richly decorated centre.
The restored ground-floor foyer offers a closer view of the civic building.
Grote Markt provides the clearest full view of the hall’s west-facing frontage.
Useful to know
Start across Grote Markt for the full façade, then approach the ground-floor entrance.
Arrange an official tour if you want to see upper rooms; ordinary foyer access does not include them.
