Why go

Use this route to compare two ancestral mountains before returning to Auckland’s maritime edge. Begin at Maungawhau while the summit is cooler and the city layout is easy to read. Continue to Maungakiekie for broader parkland, visible archaeological terraces and a different view toward Manukau Harbour. The zoo or Newmarket can be added only by dropping one long hill walk. Later, move west to Westhaven Marina and follow the promenade toward Viaduct Harbour. This is not a continuous walking route: allow for transfers, keep the climbs as essential anchors, and treat shopping or the zoo as optional branches.
