East Bali Temples and Harbors
Move from Besakih on Mount Agung's slope to Candidasa and Padangbai, trading sacred terraces for two contrasting east-coast bases today.
Why go
This east Bali day works for travelers prepared for a long drive and a strong change of setting. Besakih comes first because its rising courtyards need time and respectful attention. Candidasa then provides an optional coastal pause before compact Padangbai, where the harbor and nearby bays reveal a functional edge of island travel. The temple and Padangbai remain the anchors; skip Candidasa when a ceremony or traffic delays the morning. Treat the route as a seven-to-ten-hour regional day, not the sum of short visits shown on a map, and confirm Besakih access before departure.

Bali's largest temple complex climbs the western slope of Mount Agung through successive courtyards, gateways and shrines within an active pilgrimage landscape.
This compact East Bali coastal base trades a broad swimming beach for lagoon views, offshore islets and practical access to Karangasem's inland heritage.
A compact East Bali harbor mixes ferries, dive boats, a working village and two small beaches, making transport and coastal life unusually close together.
