Why go
The museum gives context to the temples and palaces nearby. Its galleries move from prehistoric material through Thai kingdoms and regional Buddhist art, while the former vice king’s palace remains part of the display. The Ram Khamhaeng Inscription and Red House anchor two very different stories: written history and domestic royal life.
What to look for
- See the Ram Khamhaeng Inscription in the Thai History Gallery.
- Enter the Red House, furnished in an early Bangkok-period domestic style.
- Compare collections from Dvaravati, Srivijaya, Sukhothai and Ayutthaya.
The full story
The museum’s origins lie in King Mongkut’s private collection of antiquities. In 1874, King Chulalongkorn opened a public museum in the Grand Palace’s Concordia Pavilion, then moved the collection to the former Front Palace in 1887. That royal compound had belonged to the vice king, a position with its own court and political importance. The museum later came under the Fine Arts Department and developed into the country’s principal national collection. Its galleries cover Thai history from prehistory through the Bangkok period and place Thai art beside related traditions from India, China and Southeast Asia. The Ram Khamhaeng Inscription is central to the historical narrative and is recognized by UNESCO’s Memory of the World program. The teak Red House offers a more intimate counterpoint. Once associated with Princess Sri Sudarak and Queen Sri Suriyen, it is furnished to evoke elite domestic life in the early Bangkok period.
