Government House of Thailand

The prime minister’s working complex combines Venetian-inspired architecture with the ceremonial and political functions of Thailand’s modern executive government in Dusit.

Government House of Thailand

Why go

Even without confirmed public access, Government House adds architectural and political context to the Dusit area. Its domed main building began as a private commission before becoming the seat of the prime minister in 1941. Its domed façade makes the political role of the complex legible from the surrounding Dusit streets.

What to look for

  • Look for the golden dome above the main building and its statue of Phra Phrom.
  • Compare the ornate façade with Venice’s Ca’ d’Oro, cited as an architectural reference.
  • Read the complex as both a working office and a setting for state receptions.

The full story

The complex began with a residence commissioned by King Vajiravudh in 1923 for one of his generals. Italian architect Annibale Rigotti designed the main building, but construction remained unfinished when the king died and Rigotti returned to Italy. The property later took on a national role, becoming the prime minister’s seat in 1941. Prime Minister Plaek Phibunsongkhram then asked Italian-born artist Corrado Feroci and architect Ercole Manfredi to help complete the project. Its most recognizable element is the golden dome, which contains a statue of Phra Phrom, the Thai form of Brahma. The main façade draws comparison with the Ca’ d’Oro in Venice, giving the official complex a distinctly palace-like character. Today the buildings hold offices, conference rooms and spaces for state functions and foreign guests. The site has also been entangled in modern political conflict, making its formal architecture inseparable from the contested work of government carried out inside.

Useful to know

  • Plan for an exterior view unless an official public program confirms entry.
  • Combine the stop with Ratchadamnoen Avenue and nearby Dusit landmarks.
  • Check traffic conditions because political events can affect surrounding roads.
