The Holburne Museum
The Holburne Museum combines a varied art collection with a Georgian building at the end of Great Pulteney Street. Give it time for both the galleries and its Sydney Gardens setting.
Sir William Holburne's collection brings together painting, silver, bronzes, porcelain and smaller decorative objects, so the visit moves across materials rather than one artistic school. The building was originally the Sydney Hotel, and its position closes the long view down Great Pulteney Street. That architectural approach makes arriving part of the experience.
What to look for
The collection ranges from paintings to silver, bronzes and porcelain.
The museum occupies the former Sydney Hotel building.
Sydney Gardens extends behind its street-facing setting.
Useful to know
Allow around an hour and a half for the galleries.
Approach along Great Pulteney Street for the long view, then continue into Sydney Gardens if you want an outdoor extension.
