San Giovanni in Monte
This church near Piazza Santo Stefano joins a late Gothic interior to a Renaissance façade. The carved eagle at the entrance and the old stained glass make it a focused church stop.
The eagle by Niccolò dell'Arca gives the façade an unusually clear detail to seek out before going in. Inside, the three-nave space and stained glass show another layer of the building's long history. The neighboring former monastery serves university functions, so centre the visit on the church.
What to look for
Niccolò dell'Arca's eagle marks the church frontage.
Three naves shape the interior.
Historic stained glass adds colour inside the church.
Useful to know
Look for the eagle before entering; it is easy to miss when approaching the doorway.
Check current church access before making a special trip; the former monastery has separate university uses.
