Why go
Explore this area on foot if streets and reused heritage buildings interest you. The trail connects older terraces, Caxton Street and the former barracks, showing a different Brisbane from the office towers nearby. Treat shops and venues as separate decisions along the walk.
What to look for
- The former Petrie Terrace Police Barracks has been adapted within The Barracks precinct.
- Caxton Street and surviving terraces show the neighbourhood’s older scale.
The full story
Petrie Terrace sits just west of central Brisbane, where the city grid gives way to a smaller neighbourhood scale. Nineteenth-century terraces and institutional buildings survived alongside later changes. The former police barracks are a particularly visible example of adaptation, now incorporated into The Barracks precinct. Caxton Street and nearby heritage places make the area more rewarding when followed as a walk than when treated as one point on a map. Brisbane City Council’s self-guided trail provides a defined path through these layers, linking the stadium side of the neighbourhood with the barracks. Look at the transitions between old buildings and newer uses, and allow time to step aside on the street rather than rushing between addresses. Commercial venues have their own access arrangements, separate from the public walk.
Useful to know
- Use the official heritage trail for a defined walking route.
- Check individual venues before planning an interior stop.
