Why go
The rectangular field focuses attention on rugby league, rugby union and football in a way that contrasts with The Gabba's oval. A match offers the crowd experience; a tour gives a closer look at dressing rooms, sidelines and media areas when offered. Choose between those experiences before planning the visit.
What to look for
- The rectangular playing field and steep spectator stands.
- Dressing rooms and media spaces on a stadium tour.
- The historic Lang Park name carried by the site.
The full story
Before it became a major stadium, this Milton site was part of the North Brisbane Cemetery. It was remade as public recreation land in the early twentieth century and named Lang Park in 1914. Different sports used the ground before rugby league became central to its identity in the 1950s. The modern stadium retains the historic site name alongside its current sponsorship name, Suncorp Stadium. That layered identity is visible in the contrast between an old urban sporting ground and a contemporary enclosed arena. The rectangular field and close stands make the place especially suited to football codes, while organised tours, when available, show how the venue works beyond the seats. That change of use is part of the ground's identity today.
Useful to know
