Coptic Cairo
Coptic Cairo brings several historic churches, a synagogue and a museum into the Roman fortress area of Old Cairo. It rewards a slow visit to individual sites rather than a single-ticket stop.
Start at the surviving walls of Babylon Fortress, then see how the Hanging Church rises over the old fort and how the Coptic Museum gathers Egyptian Christian art nearby. Ben Ezra Synagogue adds another strand of the area’s religious history within a compact cluster.
What to look for
Churches stand inside and around the old Roman fortress walls.
The Hanging Church rises over part of Babylon Fortress.
The Coptic Museum and Ben Ezra Synagogue sit near the church cluster.
Useful to know
Pick two or three interiors rather than assuming every site follows one timetable.
Use the fortress walls to orient yourself before visiting the churches and museum.
