The Coptic Museum
Beside Babylon Fortress, the Coptic Museum brings manuscripts, icons, carved wood and frescoes into one visit. It is the clearest indoor stop for understanding the art behind Coptic Cairo’s churches.
Why go
The museum lets you examine objects that a quick church visit cannot explain on its own. Look across different materials to see how Egyptian Christian artists used images, writing and carved decoration, then step back outside to find the Roman walls beside the building.
What to look for
Manuscripts and icons show different Coptic visual traditions.
Carved woodwork and frescoes add other media to compare.
The museum stands beside the Babylon fortress walls.
Useful to know
Visit before or after the Hanging Church so the objects have an immediate architectural setting.
Allow more time here than for a single church interior if you want to compare the different media.
