Ben Ezra Synagogue
Ben Ezra Synagogue adds Jewish history to the compact religious landscape of Coptic Cairo. Its decorated interior and connection to the Cairo Geniza reward visitors who look beyond the neighboring churches.
The central bimah and inlaid hekhal give the interior distinct points of focus. The synagogue is also associated with the Cairo Geniza, a store of manuscripts that reshaped understanding of Jewish life around the Mediterranean; the visit makes that story tangible in its original setting.
What to look for
The bimah, or reading platform, stands at the center of the synagogue.
Arabesque and mother-of-pearl inlay decorate the hekhal.
The synagogue stands near the Hanging Church within Coptic Cairo’s religious cluster.
Useful to know
Combine it with the nearby Hanging Church and Coptic Museum for a fuller Old Cairo visit.
