Why go
The site links Charleston's early theater history to a building you can still use. The original theater opened here in 1736; the surviving structure began as the Planter's Hotel in 1809 and was adapted for performances in the 1930s. That layered history is visible in its hotel-era balcony and theater interior.
What to look for
- The wrought-iron balcony and sandstone columns on the Church Street facade
- The auditorium inside the former Planter's Hotel
- The courtyard adjoining the theater
Useful to know
- Check the theater's current self-guided tour access before planning an interior visit.
- If you want to see a production, check Charleston Stage's current program and book that separately.
