New Fortress of Corfu
Climb the Venetian stronghold on St. Mark's hill for a different view of Corfu Town and its harbour. Its layered bastions show how the city's defences expanded beyond the older citadel.
After attacks exposed the wider town, the Venetians extended its defences and made this hill a second strong point. The gate, dry moat and upper bastions reveal a fortress planned around the city as well as the sea. From the Bastion of the Seven Winds, look toward the harbour and mainland mountains.
What to look for
A winged lion of Saint Mark marks the eastern gate's Venetian identity.
The dry moat runs below the western walls toward the harbour.
The Bastion of the Seven Winds looks out over sea and mainland mountains.
Useful to know
Allow for steps and changes of level to reach the upper viewpoints.
Combine it with a walk through the western Old Town to compare the city's two fortresses.
