San Giacomo Old Town Hall
Pause at the former San Giacomo theatre in Corfu Town's Town Hall Square for an exterior glimpse of the city's opera history. The building later became the town hall.
A Venetian nobles' loggia became a theatre in the eighteenth century and helped make opera part of Corfu's cultural life. Italian performers and local musicians met here, feeding the Ionian musical tradition. The façade is the visible clue today; performances moved elsewhere long ago.
What to look for
The former theatre façade faces Town Hall Square.
The building's civic use followed its long chapter as an opera house.
Useful to know
Treat San Giacomo as an exterior stop while walking through the Old Town.
Use the square to take in the building; do not plan an opera performance or interior theatre tour here.
