From the Odeon to the Harbor Street

Begin among the Odeon’s civic seats, descend Curetes Street to the Terrace Houses and Library of Celsus, then finish beside the Great Theatre at the reported eastern viewing stretch of Arcadiane, where access depends on current barriers.

From the Odeon to the Harbor Street

Why go

This is a first visit to the heart of Ephesus for travelers who want a coherent walk through its most recognizable spaces. The route follows the city’s natural downhill sequence, from the upper civic quarter to the theatre area, so each stop helps explain the next. Give the Terrace Houses more time than the streetside monuments: their mosaics and wall paintings reward a slower look. The Arcadiane is an optional finish beside the theatre. A visitor guide describes the eastern stretch as accessible; follow current barriers and turn back before any closed harborward section. The Odeon, street, houses, library and theatre form a complete day on their own.

    Odeon (Bouleuterion)

The small semicircular Odeon beside the State Agora served council meetings as well as performances. Its surviving seating helps distinguish upper Ephesus’s civic life from the city’s much larger theatre.

    Main stop · 60–90 min

    Terrace Houses

The roofed Terrace Houses preserve domestic mosaics, wall paintings and heating features in a way open-air street ruins cannot. They need more time than a quick façade stop.
