Dresden Frauenkirche

The rebuilt Frauenkirche crowns Dresden's Neumarkt with a great stone dome. Its interior and exterior tell a story of wartime destruction and reconstruction.

Why go

Dark surviving stones are set among newer pale masonry, making the rebuilding visible as you circle the church. The original Baroque building was destroyed in the Second World War; its reconstruction became a visible public rebuilding effort after German reunification. Go inside when visitor access allows, then step back across Neumarkt to read the dome in the skyline.

What to look for

  • The stone dome rises over Neumarkt
  • Reused dark stones reveal the reconstruction
