Väskinde Church
Väskinde brings a sculpted Gothic doorway together with an older painted font. It is a useful stop for comparing medieval carving, surviving imagery and later changes of colour.
The twelfth-century font by Majestatis shows Christ as judge and scenes from his childhood, but its paint belongs to the eighteenth century. That difference between carving and colour is worth keeping in mind while looking. The richly ornamented south choir portal offers a second focus, with decoration unusual for Gotland and linked to Westphalian influence.
What to look for
Medieval paintings include Saint George and the dragon and the Coronation of Mary.
Pointed Gothic windows contrast with the older font.
The triumphal cross dates from around 1240.
Useful to know
Confirm interior access with the parish before travelling for the font and wall paintings.
