Why go
This walk suits visitors most interested in monumental architecture and the way Athens’ built centre changed over time. The surviving columns of the Temple of Olympian Zeus provide a short opening stop before the longer climb and circuit at the Acropolis of Athens. Give the Parthenon, Erechtheion and gateways enough time to be more than a distant view. From the hill, descend to the Roman Agora of Athens for a closer look at a later marketplace. The three sites sit close together, but they are all outdoors and the Acropolis ascent makes the middle of the day demanding. Keep a steady pace rather than adding another major excavation.
