Why go
The district works best as a short urban walk rather than a single sight. Its nineteenth-century market, harbour and military history remain close together: Market Square and Kolera-allas occupy the water’s edge, while Kasarmitori and the former Guard barracks explain the neighbourhood’s name.
What to look for
- Market Square and its piers took shape after filling work began along the waterfront in 1813.
- The district was named for the former Russian army barracks near Kasarmitori; the oldest part dates to 1822.
- Old Market Hall, completed in 1889, preserves the area’s long connection with food trading.
Useful to know
- The district itself is always accessible, but its markets, museums, restaurants and other venues keep separate hours.
- Start at Market Square, then continue through the district toward Kasarmitori and the Design Museum.
