Why go
The appeal lies in encountering recognisable figures at close range and using the themed rooms as photo settings. Hong Kong and Asian celebrity culture form part of the attraction's identity alongside international personalities. Add it to a Peak visit if the wax figures themselves interest you, allowing time beyond the journey up.
What to look for
- Celebrity likenesses appear in themed photo settings.
- The attraction is inside the Peak Tower.
The full story
The Hong Kong attraction opened at the Peak in 2000, bringing the wax museum chain a permanent base in Asia. Its inclusion of regional celebrities gave the familiar format a connection to the entertainment culture of Hong Kong and its neighbouring markets. The figures also represent a detailed sculptural process. Artists record a sitter's appearance and measurements, then make a clay model from which moulds are produced. Wax is used for the head and hands, eyes are painted, and real hair is inserted strand by strand. Those steps offer another way to look at a likeness beyond recognising its subject. Compare the treatment of hair, eyes and facial expression when standing beside a figure: the finished illusion depends on many individual decisions about a person's appearance.
Useful to know
- Allow about 90 minutes for the rooms and photographs, excluding Peak Tram queues.
