Why go
This archaeology day is for visitors ready to compare two towns buried by the same eruption. Herculaneum Archaeological Park, with its compact streets and surviving houses, makes a strong morning focus. Allow a generous transfer to Pompeii Archaeological Park by the Vesuvian railway, including the walk to the station and time for a train; check that day’s timetable before setting out. A selective route through Pompeii’s much larger excavated city keeps the visit manageable. End in modern Pompei, a separate living town, with a walk toward Piazza Bartolo Longo and its sanctuary. That final stop contrasts the ancient sites with present-day life.
