House of the Weeping Widow
A woman's sculpted face gives this Art Nouveau mansion its memorable name: rain runs down her cheeks like tears. Its appeal is the facade; the building became an official presidential residence.
Eduard Bradtman designed the house for merchant Serhiy Arshavskyi in 1907. The small, two-storey composition rewards attention to a single expressive detail rather than monumental scale. Understanding how the mask channels water connects the building's memorable nickname directly with the design of its facade.
What to look for
The female mask sits on the mansion's principal facade.
The Art Nouveau exterior belongs to Kyiv's early twentieth-century mansion architecture.
