Why go
Built in 2001 for the tenth anniversary of Ukrainian independence, the monument gives the square a clear commemorative focus. Sculptor Anatolii Kushch modelled the figure on his daughter. The contrast between pale stone below and bronze above helps you read a composition that is easy to see only as a distant column.
What to look for
- The Berehynia holds a viburnum branch above Maidan.
- Gilding picks out the branch and details of the figure's clothing.
- The pedestal takes the form of a Ukrainian Baroque temple.
Useful to know
- Include the monument within a Maidan visit rather than treating it as a separate lengthy stop.
- Compare it with the Liadski Gates to see two different symbols introduced in the square's modern reconstruction.
