Liadski Gates
This gateway on Maidan recalls a medieval city entrance but is a modern reconstruction. Its bronze Archangel Michael makes it an easy landmark to identify while exploring the square.
The monument brings the defensive history of medieval Kyiv into a square otherwise strongly associated with modern political life. Archaeological remains were found nearby, but the gateway you see was reconstructed in 2001. The distinction matters: look at it as a commemoration of the old city boundary rather than surviving medieval masonry.
What to look for
A winged Archangel Michael crowns the gateway.
The figure carries a sword and a gilded shield.
Useful to know
Pair the gates with the Independence Monument during a Maidan visit.
Do not expect access to nearby archaeological remains as part of viewing the gateway.
