Why go
The park began in 1885 as a Vienna-inspired leisure ground with a concert bowl, rink, pool, theatre and zoo. Most of that programme disappeared as development reduced the grounds, leaving the pond and a group of abstract sculptures installed from 1974 as the clearest traces of its changing role.
What to look for
- The pond is the principal survivor of the park’s original leisure layout.
- Abstract sculptures have stood throughout the grounds since 1974.
- The park’s reduced footprint reflects the surrounding city’s expansion after the First World War.
Useful to know
- Use the park for a short, unprogrammed stroll rather than planning it as a major attraction.
- Outdoor conditions determine comfort, so favour daylight and suitable weather for seeing the sculptures.
