Why go
The theatre opened in 1955 as Socialist Realism was giving way to de-Stalinisation, then developed an avant-garde identity under artists including Krystyna Skuszanka, Jerzy Krasowski and Józef Szajna. Its origin inside a planned workers’ district makes a performance here a cultural counterpart to exploring Nowa Huta’s monumental civic architecture.
What to look for
- The 1954–55 theatre building stands within Nowa Huta’s planned housing estate.
- Józef Szajna brought his visual art and wartime experience to the stage.
- The programme spans the main stage, Scena Pod Ratuszem and Teatralny Instytut Młodych.
Useful to know
- Select a dated performance and confirm its venue before booking; the theatre uses several stages.
- Pair an evening performance with an earlier walk around Plac Centralny and Aleja Róż.
