Merdeka Square and Chinatown

A central-day grouping from Merdeka Square’s civic buildings through Central Market to the temples and lanes around Petaling Street. The focus is Merdeka Square and Chinatown within its own urban and cultural setting.

Merdeka Square and Chinatown

Why go

This compact route follows Kuala Lumpur’s early civic and commercial core. Begin around Dataran Merdeka, where the Sultan Abdul Samad Building frames the colonial administrative precinct, then move toward the National Textile Museum and Central Market Kuala Lumpur. Sri Maha Mariamman Temple and Sin Sze Si Ya Temple reveal distinct religious traditions within the Chinatown streets. Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad is a strong opening alternative, while one of the smaller interiors can remain optional to keep the sequence unhurried.

Useful to know

  • Begin outdoors before midday heat, then use museums or Central Market for an indoor break.
  • Treat smaller worship sites as optional if ceremonies or access restrictions affect the route.
