Why go
Praça da Figueira is less ceremonial than neighboring Rossio, which makes its urban history easier to miss. The site changed from the All-Saints Royal Hospital to an open market, then a large covered market, and finally the present square, while the surrounding four-storey blocks retain Baixa's uniform profile.
What to look for
- The square occupies ground once covered by the All-Saints Royal Hospital.
- A covered market stood here from the late nineteenth century until 1949.
- King John I's equestrian statue includes medallions of two allies from the 1385 Revolution.
Useful to know
- Combine the square with Rossio, a short walk away, to compare two different Baixa public spaces.
- Use the open center to look back at the consistent four-storey Pombaline perimeter.
