Oriel Chambers
An 1864 Water Street office building uses repeated projecting windows to bring light into its rooms. The unusual glass-and-metal facade is the reason for an exterior stop.
Why go
Peter Ellis’s design lets the windows do most of the architectural work. Stand across Water Street to see the grid of oriels together, then move nearer to notice their depth. The building offers a sharp contrast with the heavier stone offices around Liverpool Town Hall.
What to look for
See the grid of projecting oriel windows from across Water Street.
Notice how glass and metal lighten the office frontage.
Useful to know
View the facade from Water Street in daylight.
Do not assume public access to the working offices.
Combine it with Liverpool Town Hall and the Pier Head streets nearby.
